Teaching As A Calling

This training will change the way you see yourself, movement, the body, and the world around you as an initiation.

As you learn to lead you will meet your edges within yourself and others. This training provides resourcing with an internal toolkit to navigate teaching challenges.

Previous Momentum students are already facilitating Contact Improvisation classes and jams in the local and International dance communities.

Let us serve with a framework to share the practice.

.

ThisTraining Is For You If

✔️ You want to find more confidence, grace and ease in how you show up teaching.

✔️ You want to start or contribute to your own contact community, but don’t know where to begin.

✔️ You wish to connect with other like-minded contact dancers and build a worldwide network of collaborators.

✔️ You want to learn how to regulate your own nervous system while teaching, prepare for classes, and all the little extras - such as finding venues and how to handle injuries.

✔️ You are already a teacher but need some more inspiration and ideas to create sequences in teaching.

Here’s something you need to understand about teaching contact improvisation:

✘ Wanting to create fun jams isn’t enough.

✘ Wanting to make an impact and create a community isn’t enough.

✘ Wanting to share what you know and teach contact skills isn’t enough.

✔️ It’s how you break it down so students understand you.

✔️ It’s how you deal with personal off days, challenges, and setbacks.

✔️ It’s how you run a business, so the business doesn’t run you down.

✔️ It’s how you stay educated about Contact Improvisation, where it came from and why we are dancing it.

✔️ It’s how you plan workshops and classes that leave students writing thank you messages afterward, claiming their transformations with gratitude.

When I began my journey teaching Contact Improv, I thought I needed to:

✘ Collaborate with more experienced teachers

✘ Teach a class during a jam to cater to newcomers

✘ Undercharge for my workshops and jams to compete with the market.

✘ Include free lunches or free jams as incentives.

✘ Accept no-shows, no-payments, and clients who didn’t value the work.

✘ Overcompensate by attending and spending money on a lot of advanced contact trainings and contact festivals, not trusting that what I knew, was enough.

❤ Continuing to dance, love, and research contact improvisation, where it lit me up.

About

Momentum

Momentum Contact Improvisation Fundamental Skills Workshop is what I will sharing with you as a formula for welcoming newcomers with dance technique, play, and mindfulness (LEVEL 2).

This workshop has been shared over 25 times in Bali and Canada since 2020, training hundreds of dancers in the contact community.

As a two day workshop over 11 hours, we cover the primary pathways in Contact Improvisation for newcomers, including extras such as contemporary floorwork, Authentic Movement, Bodywork, Bartenieff Fundamentals.

You are welcome to break down this material to teach as classes or pre-jam warm ups.

Momentum Students Learn

✔️ Contact Improvisation principles, such as falling, sharing weight, listening, and center of gravity.

✔️ Beginners Foundational Skills, including low post, surfing and safety in basic lifts.

✔️ Supporting practices - Authentic Movement, Contemporary Floorwork, Bartenieff Fundamentals, Bodywork and Qigong.

These principles are what we are teaching you how to facilitate, from a place of embodied knowledge, play, patience and curiousity.

Hi, I’m

Aalia.

Contact Improvisation became a driving force to knowing my body and other's since it entered my life in 2018. It shaped my identity because of it’s dynamic fluidity and ever-changing nature. To dance is to live.

Having practiced many dance forms for over 20 years - from hip hop to swing dance, I fell in love with Contact from first touch / flight.

My background of studying CI has taken me to learn from over 40 International Contact teachers.

As a 3rd generation CI teacher, I stay connected to it's historical roots in North America. My training began in Vancouver at Edam Dance Company, with some of the CI originators of the practice, including Andrew Harwood, Anne Cooper, Kirstie Simson & Peter Bingham.

Along the way, I’ve created Faces of CI - the podcast interviewing Contact Facilitators, and Contact Body, an online Contact course, while also dancing and directing in music videos.

I’ll be sharing embodied knowledge from teaching since 2019, forming the path of hosting retreats, classes, jams, and workshops in Bali, Thailand, and Canada.

Now I get to support new facilitators in achieving THEIR vision of what it means to “be a contact teacher” through honoring their inherent gifts, and in the ways THEY want to support their communities.

We've been told by our grads :

"Wow! This gave so many tools & opened up so many possibilities for me to teach other dance styles and be facilitator in other areas in my life."

THREE Contact Facilitators have already gone through our Momentum Training in Bali, and are now teaching in China, Portugal, and United States.

“I got to attend and teach this time during Momentum workshop, so I had a lot of 1:1 time AND I got to meet all these amazing people and experience the actual Momentum Contact Workshop. I felt like it was a great result.

I think beyond the technical pieces you taught me, I really enjoyed seeing the maturity of your style of managing the room, managing the group, managing the day, managing a sequence to keep the flow, to keep energy high. It's something I didn't really think about. I didn't realize how much thought goes into this. There's a reason why some people run really good workshops and some don't.

I think before this facilitator training started, I just wanted to get through to the end. But to be at the end and I still feel high and happy!

This was something I really wanted to do for myself, and I came here and completed it, and that feels like a big win. I'm really happy to have done this. "

From momentum contact facilitator

I just completed the 10 day training with so many takeaways. This journey was about exploring my inner self and expanding the boundaries of my world.

We learned the history and culture of CI, contact skills, as well as useful and practical skills to not be injured and dance safely. We had sessions on marketing, holding energy of the container, and how to co-operate with venues. Not just dance but beyond the dance, helping us to become independent facilitators.

Before this, I was not sure if I could make it, because maybe I don’t have enough experience or know how to communicate, but it happened naturally in the teaching, because of all that we learned here with Aalia’s trust and guidance. It was a very joyful and playful time together!

This is more than knowledge, but confidence and support. I’m so lucky to be a part of this and meet you all. I can’t wait to share this in my China Contact Community.

It’s not easy for me, I felt confused before this training about my career, but after this training it became so clear. In every moment, Aalia was helping us to create a good experience. If you want to be a facilitator, come and join us - it’s so worthwhile!”
